Giant Musselburgh Improved

Mild flavor, slightly bitter. Cream colored squat pseudostems, significantly swollen at base. Pseudostems measure 3.1-7.3" long and 1.7-3.0" wide. About 50% of plants leaves have spiraled habit, resembling agave; remaining plants have open leaf structure. Plants measure 1.4-2.6' high. Leaves blue-green; intermediate density; 6-10 leaves per plant. Moderate leaf bloom. Acquired by SSE from Thompson & Morgan. The original “Musselburgh” or “Giant Musselburgh” leek was first developed in Musselburgh, Scotland sometime before 1834. Both the original and "improved" strains have been available in the US during the 19th and 20th centuries. SSE Accession # 111307
