VEGETABLES / CORN
DENT
8-10' sturdy stalks, bearing one or two ears each of multicolor grains, some are yellow/blue/purple mixes and others are red/maroon . When closely inspected, there are often brown kernels among the purple. We have had this corn remain standing after 4" of rain in an hour and 70 mph micro burst winds. Excellent for corn meal. Makes good roasting ears, as long as one isn't expecting sweet corn. Great for support for cornfield beans and cowpeas. Originally a flint, this corn was passed down generations through the Ketelsen family, in IA. They obtained their original seed from the Mesquakie Indians, but it was crossed with various corn belt dents.52 days to tassel, 120 to dry seed.
Starting in 2019 I have been selecting back, more toward flint. The shift is notable not only in a higher percentage of flint kernels, but also an overall "redder" mix of color.
