VEGETABLES / TOMATO
RED
Red, plum-shaped, paste tomato with pointed ends. Good flavor. Indeterminate. Regular leaves. Slightly ribbed at stem end. Moderate radial and concentric cracking and some tendency to split. Slight susceptibility to sun scald. 2-6 fruit per cluster. Fruit measure 3-4" long, 2-2.5" long, and weigh 4-8oz. Red flesh. Brix score: 5.0. Plants grow ~4' tall. Highly productive when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE by John Rahart (NM RA J) in the early 1980s. Given to John by his father, Andrew Rahart, who purchased it at a local greenhouse near Suffern, NY in the 1970s. The greenhouse acquired it from a local Italian gentleman named Giuseppe, who reportedly brought the variety to the U.S. when he immigrated from Italy. When the greenhouse grower asked Giuseppe for the tomato's name, he misunderstood Giuseppe's reply that it had no name and was just "my own." By the time the error was realized, the name "Myona" had stuck. Rahart finds it excellent for canning. SSE Accession # 121527
