Marrowstem

Single Image
VEGETABLES / KALE
Very tall growing kale with large leaves and a swollen stem as the name implies. Stem "milk" is purportedly very nutritious for fodder. Leaves are concentrated at the top of the plant in an umbrella-shaped canopy. Plants sometimes have difficulty supporting themselves and may benefit from staking. Leaves are dark green and can be eaten, especially when small, but are rather tough and bitter. Brassica oleracea. Start it in the spring and give it the whole growing season to achieve its full potential. This accession matches the description of Marrowstem listed in The Field and Garden Vegetables of America from 1874. Acquired by SSE from Bountiful Gardens (CV Bou). SSE Accession # 111112
