Carolyn's Gems

FLOWERS / MARIGOLD
A delightful addition to any garden! Blooms average 1.2" across and range in color from scarlet to pale orange. Some flower heads have several colors on the orange-red spectrum, creating a tie-dyed appearance. Plants have a semi-upright habit and average 2' tall. Blooms until frost. Logan Anderson fell in love with the marigolds growing in his neighbor’s garden soon after moving into his new home in Columbus, Indiana in 2019. His neighbor, Carolyn Johnson, has been growing this marigold since 1965 from seeds she received as a wedding gift from her mother-in-law Margaret Johnson. Carolyn’s husband, Fred, says he remembers those same marigolds blooming in his mother’s garden in the early 1930s in Lovett Township, Jennings County, Indiana. Carolyn selects seeds from the plants she thinks are the prettiest. The plants produce seeds all season long and self-seed easily. “They’re super easy to grow. They almost grow themselves!” Carolyn says. Logan started growing this variety in 2020 and donated it to SSE in 2021. SSE Accession # 133768
