Looseleaf. Yellow-green leaves; highly blistered and undulating. Very large plants, reaching 9-12" tall and 15-20" in diameter at market maturity. Largest leaves measure 9-12" long and 7-9" wide. Flavor and texture similar to a butterhead; crisp leaves, slightly bitter. Average time to bolting when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. White seeds. Given to SSE by Anna Mae Reigel (Mrs. Franklin Reigel, OH RE F) who originally obtained the variety in 1985 from the Johnson Seed Co. of Dousman, WI. It's an historic variety which Peter Henderson described in his 1867 edition of "Gardening for Profit" by saying, "This variety we place at the head of the list, believing it to be most generally useful for all purposes."
