VEGETABLES / SORGHUM
Syrup sorghum. Plants reach 7-9' tall. Seed donor Wayne Hayes of Kentucky says “one cane or stalk will make 6 tablespoons of juice, so you need approximately 55 gallons of juice to make 4 gallons of sorghum." Wayne harvests the cane when the seeds are in the dough stage. He strips off the leaves, cuts the first two joints off the top (nearest the seed head) and then cuts the stalks. BRIX reading was 15 at dough stage in 2017 at Heritage Farm. 3-6 tillers per plant. Most seed heads have red glumes; some have black glumes. Grain is red, plump, and easy to thresh.
