VEGETABLES / SORGHUM
Grain sorghum. Seeds straw color, large, plump, round, nearly completely starchy. Mahogany glumes cover 3/4 the grain. Panicles compact elliptic, pendant - striking and unique! Plants 4-6.5' tall; approachable height for easy harvesting. 0-4 tillers per plant with 1 most common. Plants mostly green but purple-red pigment sometimes present at base of stalk. Late season maturity. Flowered and set grain at about the same time as other 2013 sorghums, but took much longer for seed to dry down. No lodging when grown at Heritage Farm in 2013 or 2024. Canes slightly juicy, not sweet. Donated to SSE in the mid 1990s by Carl Barnes (OK BA C) who began offering this variety in the 1987 SSE Yearbook Exchange. SSE Accession # 119287
