Umpqua

Heading broccoli. Very good flavor and texture with sweet stalks. Head intermediate in size (4-6" long and wide), green, flat, and very uniform among plants. Stems light green. Leaves 15-20" long and 6-10" wide. Leaves green and elliptic; dentate margin; rounded at the tip; moderate bloom. Plants 20-27" tall and 30-45" wide. Asynchronous timing for heading in spring and fall 2014 at Heritage Farm, but fairly uniform when grown in 2012. Acquired by SSE from Territorial Seeds circa 1992. This modern variety has been popular in the Seed Exchange for more than 20 years and it's named after the Umpqua River in southwest Oregon. It was developed by plant breeder Tim Peters and introduced commercially in 1988 by Territorial Seed Company of Cottage Grove, Oregon. SSE Accession # 106503
