VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Dry bean. Large, solid brown seeds are flattened with a lima bean-like shape. 4-8 seeds per pod. Pods can also be eaten at the young snap bean stage when they are tender with good flavor. Pods measure 5-6" long. Slightly curved, green pods become yellow and develop light red mottling at maturity. Pods have pronounced constriction between the seeds. Weakly to moderately climbing pole bean. Leathery podded dry pods. Non-pigmented plants. White flowers. Intermediate productivity when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE in 2013 by Vera Gooch of Kentucky. Vera began growing the variety in 2008 after receiving seeds that had been stored in the freezer of her late grandparents for at least 15 years. Vera's grandparents, Rachele and JC Alford of McKinney, KY, grew the beans since at least the 1960s. The Alfords originally received them from their friend (and namesake of the variety), Pearl Peck of Lincoln County, KY. The beans are believed to be an heirloom within the Peck family, who originally lived in Morgan County, KY. SSE Accession # 132327
