HEAD
Butterhead. Small, compact plants with moderately formed heads. Light green, broad (oblate) leaves with smooth edges. Some leaves have pronounced lobing at base. Moderate surface blistering and leaf undulation. Plants average 5" tall and 8" in diameter. Largest leaves average 3.9" long by 4.3" wide. Inner leaves have excellent, slightly crisp texture and sweet flavor. Outer leaves are slightly thicker and tougher. No bitterness. White seeded. Mid-season maturing. Donated to SSE by Steve Stoller who received the variety from Amelia Scharlach Schini of Jasper County, IN. Amelia's grandmother, Louisa (Rauch) Knochel, brought the variety from Alsace-Lorraine when she immigrated to the U.S. circa 1885. Grown in Germany and Switzerland by Amelia's ancestors who were members of the Apostolic Christian Church. SSE Accession # 112520
