Striped Cavern

A beautiful, red, lobed tomato with orange streaks. Tomatoes are hollow and suitable for stuffing, similar to bell peppers. Flavor is lackluster and texture is equally poor. Be sure to stuff this tomato with something very flavorful! Tomatoes are 2.5 inches long, 2.75 inches wide, and 5-6 ounces. Fruit are born in clusters of 3-5. Brix 4.9. Regular leaves, indeterminate plants are medium-large. Mid-season maturing. Acquired by SSE from Thompson & Morgan. CV Tho offered the variety from 1984-1992, but did not include any information about the history of this variety in their catalogs. SSE staff have been unable to locate development information for a variety by this name. According to SSE’s GSI publications, it was first listed in 1987 by CV Tho, and has been widely available since then. As of 2014 it can be purchased from a large number of commercial companies.
