VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Can be used as a snap, shelly, or dry bean. Smooth and creamy texture, good nutty flavor. Strongly climbing plants have pink flowers. Wide, slightly curved pods measure 4.8-6.5" long and 0.8" wide. Mature pods are light yellow with a dark pink dash pattern. 4-5 seeds per pod. Large cranberry type seeds. Above average productivity. This variety has been stewarded by the Joe Ippoliti family since the 1960s or 1970s when Joe received seeds from Mrs. Watts of Scotia, New York. Mrs. Watts was first-generation Italian American. She received the seeds from her father, but it's not known when exactly her dad brought the seeds from Italy - the beans may have come the U.S. when he immigrated, or at a later date after revisiting Italy. Joe's son, Tom Ippoliti, continues to grow the beans and shared them with Rick Meierotto, a colleague at the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) in the mid-1980s. Rick later gave the beans to Diane Glorvigen and, having never grown them herself, Diane donated the seeds to SSE in 2012. SSE Accession # 131614
