VEGETABLES / RADISH
SUMMER
Garden radish. Staff favorite for taste in 2014. Sweet, juicy, mild and crunchy. Red to pink bulbs with white to pink flesh, cylindrical shaped, half-buried to mostly above soil, smooth skin. Market mature bulbs 2-3.5" long, 1-1.5" wide, and 0.75-2 oz. Leaves intermediate lobing, few in numbers, medium in length, intermediate hairiness, semi prostrate. Leaf midvein red. Plants 9-13" in diameter. Very bolt resistant, but late season bolting occurred when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Acquired by SSE from Territorial Seed Co (CV Ter). This market variety was likely developed in France sometime during the mid-19th century and arrived in the US by 1869 at the latest when it appeared in Curtis and Cobb's seed catalog. By the mid-1870s, a large number of commercial companies were offering the variety, and it has remained in virtually continuous commerce since then. SSE Accession # 118659
