Calbert

Single Image
VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Late maturing. Cannot get dry pods at Heritage Farm. Small, oval, beige-colored seeds with a dark eye. Green pods. ~16 seeds/pod. Yellow flowers. Sprawling vines. Grown by Marshall Carr of Wilson County, North Carolina from about 1980 to 2013. Marshall got the cowpeas circa 1980 from Mr. Calbert Perkins when Marshall's son married one of Calbert's granddaughters. However, this variety was in the Perkins family “for many years before that.” Calbert's family owned a farm in Rosewood, North Carolina and grew the cowpeas to feed his cows. When they had extra, they would also pick some for the family to eat. In 2013, Marshall Carr shared seeds with Bob Bulluck after reading an article about Bob's heritage seed collection. Bob donated this variety to SSE in 2017. SSE Accession # 133483
