VEGETABLES / CORN
DENT
Dent corn with 10-14 kernel rows. Cylindrical-conical shaped ears 5-8" long and 1.25-2" in diameter. Kernel size medium to large. Some kernels are pointed with a dent in the pointed area, but all are indented. Cob color is red and white. Red kernels are on red cobs, but white kernels can be on white or red cobs. Large tassels and large erect leaves. Tall plants 8-12' in height. Late season tasseling when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Although a dent corn, variety can be eaten at the immature stage. It is somewhat sweet with a very good corn flavor and is incredibly juicy. Terry McNeely of Bartow, Georgia is the 3rd generation to grow and steward this family heirloom corn. Terry began growing the variety in 1990 after receiving seeds from his father, John Henry McNeely Sr, for whom the corn is named. John received the variety from his father, John Parsons McNeely, sometime before John Parsons McNeely’s death in 1949. When Terry donated seeds to SSE in 2015, he mentioned that they only used the white kernels to make hominy, because the red kernels had an unappetizing appearance like large bugs when cooked. They also used the corn for livestock feed. SSE Accession # 132777
