VEGETABLES / SORGHUM
Sweet sorghum. Seeds tan with red at the tip; large; plump; mostly starchy. Red glumes cover half the grain. Panicle semi-loose, erect. Plants 8-10.5' tall, 0-4 tillers per plant with 2 most common. Plants mostly green but red pigment is usually present in leaf-midribs and basal nodes. Midseason maturity; no lodging when grown at Heritage Farm in 2013. Canes juicy, slightly sweet. Donated to SSE by John Lewis, Jr. (VA LE J2), who acquired it in 1995 from Don Cummings (IN CU D). Cummings got the variety in 1988 from Michael Adamson (NC AD M), who originally introduced it into the 1986 SSE Yearbook Exchange. Grown by Adamson's family in northern Alabama since at least the 1920s. They use the cane syrup to make molasses and the grain to make pancake flour. SSE Accession # 119319
