HEAD
Butterhead (bibb). Forms a moderately well-defined head. Dark green leaves. Inner leaves develop slight purple tinge at the margins. Small plants, reaching 3-5" tall and 7-9" wide at market maturity. Largest leaves 3-5" long, 4-5" wide. Crisp and buttery leaves. Not bitter. Average time to bolting when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Black seeds. Given to SSE by the late Mary Schultz (WA SC M) who described this variety in the 1992 SSE Yearbook Exchange as "the Kentucky original." Originally developed in the mid 1800s by Maj. John Bibb of Frankfort, KY, a veteran of the War of 1812. SSE Accession # 111688
