Hop McConnell Speckled

Plant avgs 9' tall with green stems, single stalks. Leaves erect. Tassels have secondary branching, avg 21" long. Cylindrical-conical ears with mostly red cobs, some white, and an of avg 14-16 rows in a regular pattern. Ears avg 6.8" long, 2" wide. Ear set avgs 1-2 per plant. Kernels dent type with indented top, standard size. Kernels are mostly red or white, with some variegated kernels that are white with red stripes. Each ear has one uniform kernel color. 20% stalk lodging when grown in 2011. Tasseled mid-season. Donated to SSE by Fred Pierson. This variety was historically grown by residents of Scott County, VA. Believed to have been introduced to that area circa 1900 by Wade Hopkins "Hop" McConnell, a general store merchant in Fort Blackmore, VA. Pierson recalled that all three colors were used for livestock feed, but the white ears were ground into cornmeal for family use. SSE Accession # 108538
