Grown on the farm of Caleb Ralls in Amherst County, Virginia 1785. One of Thomas Jefferson's favorite's. Size medium to large. Yellow red striping, thin skin, fine grained dense crisp tender juicy sweet tart flesh. Tree moderate vigor, open twiggy. Claimed to be susceptible to fireblight, but have never seen blight even under high heat and humidity. Very resistant to collar rot. Very late blooming escapes late frosts. June drop absent. Some insect resistance. Ex. storage. Ripens Oct. 1 scion available.
