A standout muskmelon at Heritage Farm in 2017. A staff favorite for flavor, Spear was also the earliest maturing and most productive melon among 13 other varieties in 2017. Very sweet, with a highly aromatic, complex flavor. Thick, orange, juicy flesh with a thin green rind. Fruit are football-shaped, netted, and large, measuring 8-10" long and 5-7" wide; and weighing 5-7lbs. Fruit slip from vine when ripe and rind turns a yellow-green color. H. Frazier of Estacada, OR donated this variety to SSE in the early 1980s. He acquired it from Clarence Holdridge of Talent, OR. SSE Accession # 112841
