VEGETABLES / TOMATO
PINK-PURPLE
Irregular shape, flat, round, pink fruit with green shoulders; 4" wide x 2.5' long. Medium blossom scar. Radial cracking. 5' indeterminate plants. Potato leaf type. Exserted stigma. Tad Smith of Wytheville, Virginia shared this variety with SSE in 1991. He received the variety from his neighbor, Mr. J. Parris Looney, who had been growing it since the 1940s. Mr. Looney simply called it his "potato-leaf tomato," although Tad Smith noticed both regular and potato-leaf plants existed in the population. Smith was intrigued by "the color and strong tomato taste," so in 1986, he began stabilizing the variety and selected for large, well-shaped fruits. By 1990 Smith was pleased with his results and listed 'Purple Price' for the first time in the 1991 SSE Yearbook and Exchange. He named the variety in honor of Price Hall on the Virginia Tech campus.
