VEGETABLES / MELON
Cucumber melon. Donor says best picked and eaten when 3-4 inches long when they look like little watermelons with fine peach fuzz that washes off. When they are young, they are juicy and crunchy, but have little flavor. Mature fruit rotted in field when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm so we didn't get a chance to taste it at market maturity. Donated to SSE in the mid 1990s by Peter Matey of Collierville, TN. He received it from a former employer, D. J. Luccarelli of Holmdel, NJ, whose father brought the variety to the U.S. just after 1900. SSE Accession # 109363
