Snap bean. Vines sprawling to weakly vining. Pods green, straight. Pods are juicy; firm, crunchy, with a good green bean flavor; moderately sweet. Pods best eaten when young. Weak suture string becomes strong when fully expanded. Fully expanded pods 3.8-4.5" long; 0.4-0.5" wide. Mature pods yellow with red blush. Dry pods shattering. Usually 4-5 seeds per pod. Solid brown, oval seeds. Plants non-pigmented. Light pink flowers. Shelling (horticultural) and dry beans have a light, fluffy texture. Skin is somewhat thick. Flavor is slightly fruity, nutty, and earthy like a potato. Early maturing; low productivity when grown in 2014 at Heritage Farm. Given to SSE sometime in the 1980s by Elaine Grotjohn (MN GR E). This variety was passed down within Elaine's family from her grandmother, Karna Helberg. Originally brought to the U.S. from Sweden in April 1892 by Elaine's grandparents, Andrew & Karna Helberg, who settled in Stevens County, MN. Used by the family for baked beans.
