VEGETABLES / SQUASH
C.-MAXIMA
Long, giant, warty, orange-red squash perhaps best used as an ornamental. Affectionately dubbed "orange slug" by SSE staff. Light peach colored stripes near blossom end. Fruit 2-3' long, 6-9" in diameter, and 10-30lbs. Flesh is a medium orange color, 1.5" thick. Smooth texture, rather poor flavor, slightly bitter. Brix 10.8. Dry matter content 14.5%. Somewhat low productivity when grow in 2017 at Heritage Farm. Planting afflicted by gummy stem blight. Highly vining plant. Cucurbita maxima. In 1981, Merle Van Doren of Macon, MO gave this variety to SSE co-founder Kent Whealy when he also shared seeds of the Moon and Stars watermelon. Van Doren received this squash in the late 1970s from another Macon, MO resident named Mrs. Ivan Wood. It was Mrs. Wood's neighbor who originally received it from someone in Kentucky.
