VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Pole bean. Purple-pigmented stems, green leaves. Purple flowers. Pods green with purple blush when flat. Both blush and green color are persistent--the green fades to yellow but very slowly. Leathery-podded when dry. Pods are pear-shaped in diameter, slightly curved, with medium, downward curving beak. Mature pods 6-7.5" long, 0.4-0.5" wide. Flat pods good as snap beans, becoming tough as they expand. As a shelling bean, subtle flavor, thick skin, easily shelled. 7-9 seeds per pod. Black seeds. Dry beans have a mild flavor, tougher seed coat, and slightly grainy texture. Mid-season maturity when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. Donated to SSE by Charles Baker (MS BA C) who indicated this variety was an heirloom of Helen Butler (MS BU H) of Raleigh, Mississippi. SSE Accession # 104964
