Small plants with light green, elongated leaves. Leaves are flat and semi-prostrate. Outer leaves have a tendency to twist. Plants reach 2" tall and 7-8" wide. This hardy winter salad green, also known as mache, is best sown in the fall and harvested the following spring. Flavor is best under cool, moist conditions. Hearty flavor and delicate, slightly dry texture. Plants suffer in the heat and bolted in mid to late June in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Acquired by SSE in 2016 from Fedco (CV Fed). A variety by this name was recommended by American horticulturist Fearing Burr, Jr. in his 1863 publication “Field and Garden Vegetables of North America.” SSE Accession # 132959
