Grande Beurre/Violetto OP true seed

VEGETABLES / ARTICHOKE
Organic Listing
Artichokes are normally propagated by root cuttings because they do not come true from seed. Plants grown from seed resemble their parents but are not the same. They show variation in vigor, flower size, and other characteristics. These are open pollinated seeds from Grande Beurre and Violetto that are either selfed or crossed. Artichokes from these seeds tend to be triangular and purple, resembling Violetto, with some more round or all-green, like Grand Beurre. Again, each seed will produce a new variation that may be great, or more likely, kind of average. Seeds are selected from plants that have done well at 2500' in amended red clay soil with hot dry summers. A typical use for these seeds would be to grow out a batch seeking an artichoke for a similar climate. Select the one or two best ones and propagate those through roots, and discard the rest that don't grow or produce well. Seeds are a little larger than a grain of wheat and very easy to grow. Maybe it is just me, but it seems like the seed color reflects somewhat the color of the artichoke bud. If you wish you can you can specify seed color in your order from VERY LIGHT, MEDIUM LIGHT, MEDIUM DARK, DARK or MIXED. If no selection you will receive MIXED. Larger quantities available.
