A. cruentus. Grain amaranth. Plants are very uniform. Greenish-purple leaves, petioles, and stems. Large terminal inflorescences are burgundy, erect, and have a high density of flowers. Plants reach 6-7' tall. Flowered first week of July in 2016 growout at Heritage Farm. White seed. This variety was purchased by SSE in the 1980s from Johnny's Selected Seeds (CV Jo1) of Maine, who acquired this amaranth variety from the Rodale Institute. SSE Accession # 100001
