Green Machine

Single Image
VEGETABLES / MELON
C. reticulatus. Heavily netted fruit is oblate in shape with yellow green striped skin. Fruit measure 4-4.75 inches long, 5-6 inches wide, and weigh up to 3 pounds. Green flesh measures about 1 inch thick. BRIX reading 5.0. Moderately vining. Above average productivity when grown in 2016 at Heritage Farm. Grainy flesh was not very sweet, but likely would be better given the correct conditions. Donated to SSE in 2002 by Merlyn and Mary Ann Niedens, who offered this variety in the SSE Yearbook Exchange from 1996-2009. According to Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (CV So1), it was developed by IL NI M from a cross of ‘Kansas’ and ‘Jenny Lind.’ CV So1 renamed this variety “Ice Cream Melon” in their 2004 catalog at the suggestion of Niedens.
