HEAD
A large, grey-green butterhead. Leaves are tinged with red at the margins, broad, moderately blistered, and undulating. Forms a loose head blushed with red at the tip. Sweet, tender, very nice flavor. Plants reach 6.5-7.5" tall and 10-13" wide. Resists bolting. Black seed. Donated to SSE by William Woys Weaver (PA WE W ) who acquired the variety in 1994 from David Goodman (CA GO D). This accession matches the description of 'Brown Dutch' lettuce described by American horticulturist Fearing Burr, Jr. in his 1863 publication “Field and Garden Vegetables of North America.” SSE Accession # 112318
