VEGETABLES / SQUASH
C.-MOSCHATA
C. moschata pumpkins from the Seminole tribe of Florida. This strain has been selected for larger fruits, but they are still small "pie pumpkin" size. Some of them turn out a little pear-shaped with a short neck. The flesh is dark orange, sweet, and delicious. I cut them in half, roast them in the oven until soft, and then scoop out the flesh and puree it. Perfect for autumn baking. Being from Florida, the plants like heat, humidity, and rain. Here in Texas I get a bumper crop during wet years, but they struggle during dry years. As long as they get enough water, the vines get huge. They are also resistant to squash vine borers and fungal diseases.
