Filderkraut

Single Image
VEGETABLES / CABBAGE
A big, beautiful cabbage with huge, pointed heads. This late maturing variety is ideal for sauerkraut. Its thick but tender leaves give a lot of juice. Heads are dense and can weigh upwards of 10lbs. Productivity is not as high as other varieties because plants need a lot of space. Outer leaves are big and floppy with a spread of up to 3 feet. Start in early to mid-summer to give plants plenty of time to head up before frost sweetens them. A staff favorite. This accession matches the description of Filderkraut listed in Burpee's Farm Annual of 1900. SSE member Garrett Pittenger (ONT PI G) shared this variety with SSE in 1999. He acquired it from the Graines Baumaux seed company, a French member of Seeds of Diversity Canada. A variety by this name is documented in the United States as early as 1872 in the Henry Dreer seed catalog, while French seed house Vilmorin-Andrieux described it in 1885 as a variety generally grown in northern Germany at that time.
