VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Pole bean with moderate twining tendency. White flowers. Green flat pods become yellow as they mature. Straight, flat pods have long beaks. Moderate constriction between seeds. Mature pods average 5" long by 0.5" wide. Suture string present. Snap bean, best eaten when younger. Also good as shelling (horticultural) bean with a creamy texture. Easy to shell. Standard productivity. Shattering dry pods commonly contain 7 seeds per pod. Large, white bean; great northern type with standard flavor. Mid-season maturing. This variety of bean was donated to SSE by Andrew Thomas of Mount Vernon, Missouri who received seeds from Lawrence and Teresa Schneider of Jonesboro, Arkansas. As told by Ara Lamberson (Neely) Kirksey in a 1993 article for the Craighead County Historical Society of Jonesboro, her grandfather, George Lamberson, homesteaded in the county in 1860. Ara wrote: "That fall an Indian family that had been living near the Lambersons' homestead decided to leave the area. They brought to the Lamberson cabin a No. 3 wash tub containing three beanstalks they had planted in it and told the Lamberson's that [they] wanted to leave it there with them because they wouldn't be able to take it on their long journey. They stressed that the beans were very good ones." SSE Accession # 106064
