Single Image
VEGETABLES / OKRA
Mostly red pods, with some persistent green where pods do not receive direct sunlight. Long and thin, curved, downy (non-prickly) pods have 6-9 ridges per fruit. Mature pods measure 10-12"" long by 1-1.5"" wide. Best eaten under 7"" long; subtle flavor; low mucosity. Plants grow 5-7' tall. Solid red stems, petioles and leaf midveins. Green leaves. High pod set when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. No lodging. Donated to SSE in 1997 by Jean Sherwood. Given to Jean by her father-in-law, a retired Baptist minister who is half Cherokee. He was born circa 1915 and indicated that the okra had been in the family a long time, was grown on the reservation, and passed to him. SSE Accession # 114066
