VEGETABLES / BEAN
DRY-POLE
Shelling or snap bean. Moderately difficult to shell. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee received the variety circa 1970 from the late Ernest Dana (NH DA E). Withee described this bean as a New Hampshire heirloom. This variety was commercially offered by the Billy Hepler Seed Company from 1952-1962. According to William ("Billy") Hepler, he received this variety in 1950 from Ray Nute of Farmington, New Hampshire. Ray Nute did not call it by any particular name, so Hepler named it after him. Mr. Hepler also noted that "The same bean was also known as Goddard in some locales." SSE Accession # 100981
