VEGETABLES / LETTUCE
LEAF
Curly leaf. Light green, savoyed leaves. Leaf blades are heavily blistered and highly undulate. Plants reach 5-7" tall and 11-14" in diameter at market maturity. Largest leaves 6-8" long, 7-9" wide. Excellent texture. Moderately bitter. Average time to bolting when grown in 2013 at Heritage Farm. White seeds. Donated to SSE by Mary Schultz (WA SC M) who first listed it in the 1992 SSE Yearbook Exchange. Schultz appears to have received the variety in 1988 from George & Albertine Scharbach of Colton, WA via the "Washington State Centennial Seed Search." It was originally brought to the U.S. from Austria by Albertine's ancestors. Known to have been grown by Albertine's grandparents, Ernest & Margaret (Meshishnek) Becker, who married in Stearns County, Minnesota in 1878 after emigrating from Austria as children. The Becker family later settled in the Palouse region near Colton, WA in 1887. SSE Accession # 111590
