VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Snap bean. Vigorous, leafy, strongly climbing pole bean. Greenish-white pods are relatively dry and lacking in flavor. Not very sweet. Very flat, slightly curved pods. Pods measure 5-6.5" long. 4-8 seeds per pod. Very low productivity when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Plants seemed to put most of their energy into leafy growth. Probably not well adapted to northern Iowa growing conditions. Non-pigmented plants. White flowers. Large, white, oval-shaped and flattened seeds. Very late maturing. This variety was donated to SSE in 2013 by Kathleen Moore of Vilas, North Carolina. Kathleen got the bean seeds from her mother, Bertie Lou Combs, in about the 1960s. Bertie Lou received the variety from a neighbor named Nettie Campbell. Kathleen remembers Nettie growing these beans in her yard as far back as circa 1933 when Kathleen was a child. The variety is named by Kathleen in honor of Myra Williams, a resident of Vilas, NC. Kathleen uses the variety as a fresh green bean. SSE Accession # 131795
