Peg O' My Heart

VEGETABLES / TOMATO
PINK-PURPLE
A beloved variety at Seed Savers Exchange! Large, indeterminate plants produce solid dark pink beefsteak tomatoes. Fruits measure 2.7-3.7" long, 3.8-4.3" in diameter, and weigh 0.6-1.7 pounds. Strongly depressed shoulder and ribbing at stem end. Fruit borne in clusters of 1 to 4. Regular leaves and inserted style. Mid-season maturing. Meaty and juicy with a great depth of flavor. High vigor and productivity when pruned and trained in a high tunnel at Heritage Farm in 2025. When she was in her twenties, Peg Davis of Middlebrook, Virginia, received four tomato seeds from a girl in her 9th-grade horticulture class. The student's deceased grandparents had grown the variety in Pennsylvania all their lives, but the family was not interested in continuing the tradition. For nearly five decades, Peg has been growing and selecting seed from this pink variety on her farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, selling over 3000 lbs. of them every season at Staunton's farmers market. "Our customers eagerly wait for it every year, and by the last week of July, we have long lines of people waiting for the first ripe tomatoes," says Peg. Peg Davis (Donor & Seed Source) donated this pink tomato variety to SSE in 2022. SSE Accession # 133906
