Red Astrachan

Originated in southern Russia near the Caspian sea, before 1800. Brought to Sweden and then imported into England, taken to America in 1835. Med. size fruit yellow green faint red striping and blush, thin bloom on fruit. Soft white tart sweet flesh. Healthy vigorous tree, but fruit very susceptible to scab in heat and humidity. Good drought tolerance. Ripens L. July to M. Aug. Considered best early pie apple. Good to eat fresh when fully ripe. Nice scion wood this year.
