VEGETABLES / TOMATO
OTHER-COLORED
Plum tomato. Indeterminate growth habit with regular leaves. Beautiful orange and red streaked fruits measure 2.4-3.5" long, 1.8-2.7" wide, and weigh 2.8-5.8oz. Fruit typically borne in clusters of 3-5. Minor radial cracking. Inserted stigma. Thick-walled with little juice. Texture crunchy and slightly grainy. Average vigor and productivity when grown in 2023 at Heritage Farm. Tom explained that he gave many of his varieties a Manx name in an attempt to keep his family history alive. Schimmeig Creg, for example is the Manx phrase for “Striped Rock.” Tom also explained that he started breeding both animals and plants on the farm in 1958 when he was 13 years old, and that this accession was one of the first breeding attempts that he made. He stated that, “what I was trying to do there is get a super firm tomato that had very little juice in it.” To do so he chose parent varieties like an old variety called “Red Rock” that was already fairly dense. Tom also states that this variety is an F14 hybrid and that by the time he included it in his first catalog in 1983, it had stabilized. SSE Accession # 122669
