VEGETABLES / BEAN
SNAP-POLE
Long, flat, green bean. 8-10" long. Robust flavor, a little bit stringy, juicy. Mid-season maturing. Pole bean. Medium-high productivity. 6-9 white, kidney-shaped seeds per pod. White flowers. Donated to SSE in 1981 by bean collector John Withee of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and the Wanigan Associates. Withee acquired this variety from RH Shumway Seed Company. Shumway had offered a variety by this name in their catalog beginning 1934 until at least 1975 with the same description. A variety by this name has been commercially available since it was first introduced by Hastings’ Seed Company in 1912 as ‘McCasland.’ This variety was a Georgia family’s heirloom variety that, after the death of her husband, Mrs. McCasland sent to Hastings’ Seed Co. According to “The Vegetables of New York” by U. P. Hedrick published by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in 1928, “This variety is grown chiefly in the South where popular usage has shortened the name to McCaslan.” SSE Accession # 100990
