Black Beauty

Stunning dark purple, glossy, ribbed fruit that is obovate to oblong. Market mature fruit measure 3.5-5.5" long, 2.5-4.75" wide, and weigh up to 20 oz. Yellow-brown seed mature fruit with 5-7 locules measure 6-8.5" long, 4.25-6" wide, and weigh up to 3.5 lbs. Moderate number of spines on fruit calyx and peduncle. Green leaves have light purple veins and moderate lobing. Purple flowers. Plants 25-30" tall. Mid-season maturity and moderate to high yield when grown in 2015 at Heritage Farm. Sweet, delicious, firm variety that was a favorite of some SSE staff in 2015. Originally introduced in 1902 by the W. Atlee Burpee seed company. SSE Accession # 109504
