Pole bean with a strong twining tendency. Dark pink flowers. Purple blush on young pods becomes more extensive and darker with maturity. Flat, slightly curved pods have a long beak. Slight constriction of seeds. Mature pods average 5.5" long by 0.4" wide. Suture string present. Snap bean. Mature beans are easy to shell with a green bean flavor. Standard productivity. Leathery dry pods average 6-8 seeds per pod. Black bean. Dry beans have a green bean flavor and dense, creamy texture. Somewhat tough skin. Late maturity when grown at Heritage Farm in 2013. Donated to SSE by John Simmons and originally grown by Simmons' great-great-grandmother, Rhonda Herring George, as early as the mid-1800s in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. It's been passed down within the family who used it as a snap bean (canned or frozen) and a shelling bean. SSE Accession # 105712
