VEGETABLES / MELON
Chito-type melon. Small, round to ovate fruit turn yellow at maturity. Smooth rind with minor netting. Fruit abscises from vine when overripe. Flesh is firm, white and slightly sour. Not sweet, no aroma. Melons are meant for processing. Small fruits have thick flesh and a solid seed cavity. Plants showed a higher degree of resistance to anthracnose than most other melons in 2014 growout at Heritage Farm. Plants sprawl vigorously. Average productivity. Late maturing. Donated to SSE in the mid 1990s by Laura Paine (WI PA L), who received the variety from Duane Kaiser of Madison, WI. It was passed down from Duane's mother and grandmother, who both grew the melon in Clayton County, IA and used it exclusively for making jam. Likely grown in the family since the 1880s.
