VEGETABLES / COWPEA
Organic Listing
Originally obtained from Marcy Frantom in 2006, described as follows: “Bush, purple flowers, runs some, heavy producer. Peas are jade green with brown checkered swirls, 14-17 peas per pod… brought from Mississippi by Abner Lafayette Martin after the Civil War.”
Abner was first cousin to my great- grandfather, Jesse Newton Martin of Smith county, MS. I first grew this pea when living in Indiana in 2006. I shared it with my aunt who resides in Smith county, MS. She shared seeds with a Mississippi Martin cousin. When he saw it he said, “That’s just the old Martin pea”.
This pea made a 150-year round trip from MS to LA to IN and back to MS, remaining unchanged and recognizable. I now grow it in my Indiana garden. It has performed well in every location. Packet contains 25 organically grown seeds. CORRECTION: This pea was mislabeled as the "TW Martin Original Purplehull Pea". After corresponding with Marcy Frantom and SSE, we are certain that it is correctly named TE Martin.
