VEGETABLES / RUTABAGA
Raw roots are dry and soft with a slight brassica like zest but are rather underwhelming. Cooked roots are bland and slightly bitter, but have a creamy texture. Described as having a yellow mustard like taste. Yellow roots with purple coloring around the tops range in shape from triangular to elliptic to branched. Most roots are tall and bottle-shaped. Roots grow largely above the soil line. Roots 4.9-5.9" long, 1.5-3.6" wide, and weigh 4-28 oz. Leaves are light green, long and spindly and have a purple midvein. Plants are 6.3-10.2" tall and 29-44" in diameter. Uniform planting. Donated to SSE by Will Bonsall (ME BO W). This accession was previously distributed by SSE incorrectly as a turnip, but botanically, it is a rutabaga. SSE Accession # 127683
